Volunteer Activity Group Leader


Headway SELNWK supports the rehabilitation of Brain Injury and Stroke sufferers in the South East London and North West Kent area.
We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers to lead activity groups at our Rehabilitation Day Centres. Whether you can share your art expertise, lead a ‘Read Aloud’ session or run a gentle exercise class we would like to hear from you. New ideas and suggestions for group activities are always welcome if you have the relevant skills and/or interest.

Our varied activity programme provides a fun and engaging environment to help our clients put into practice many of the cognitive and sensory skills that they have been working on during their rehabilitation programme. People with Brain Injuries need consistent and frequent practice to regain the abilities that were lost/damaged as a result of their injury and related sensory and cognitive difficulties - our volunteers are integral to this process.

As an Activity Group Leader, you will receive any necessary support and supervision from our Social Rehabilitation Team. You will also be provided with training on Brain Injury, its impact on individuals and how to lead groups to enable the greatest therapeutic benefit from all participants.
If you can spare some of your time to volunteer at one of our Headway Day Centres and would like to share your expertise, please get in touch. We are looking for facilities in pottery, woodwork, painting, gardening, computer classes, educational and physical activities among others.

Commitments:


We would ask that you can commit to one day per week for a minimum of 3 months, if possible, to provide the structure needed for the Activity Programme.


Relevant Experience:


All you need is a passion to share a skill or activity with our clients.
Any previous work in a social care/rehabilitation setting would be an advantage but is not necessary.

Training


Headway SELNWK offer Health and Social Care level 2 placements as well as a comprehensive In- Service training plan, delivery specific training around Acquired Brain Injury. Mandatory training is also available to Volunteers.


Locations:


Our day centres are located at Abbeywood (Goldie Leigh Hospital site), Deptford and Bromley. We welcome volunteers to all of these centres.

 

Volunteer – Swimming programme


Headway SELNWK supports the rehabilitation of Brain Injury and Stroke sufferers in the South East London and North West Kent area.


We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers to assist our Social Rehabilitation Team support a small group of clients access our local Leisure Centre’s to swim.


Our varied activity programme provides a fun and engaging environment to help our clients put into practice many of the cognitive and sensory skills that they have been working on during their rehabilitation programme. People with Brain Injuries need consistent and frequent practice to regain the abilities that were lost/ damaged as a result of their injury and related sensory and cognitive difficulties - our volunteers are integral to this process.


As an Activity Volunteer, you will receive any necessary support and supervision from our Social Rehabilitation Team. You will also be provided with training on Brain Injury, its impact on individuals and how to lead groups to enable the greatest therapeutic benefit from all participants.


If you can spare a few hours per week to support the swimming group and would like to share your expertise, please get in touch.

Brain Injury Rehabilitation Activities General Support Volunteer


Headway SELNWK supports the rehabilitation of Brain Injury and Stroke sufferers in the South East London and North West Kent area.


We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers to provide general support to our clients and assist the staff at our day centres, which are located in Abbeywood (Goldie Leigh Hospital site), Deptford and Bromley. Our clients, who have suffered a Brain Injury or stroke as a result of a traffic/sport accident or other incident, attend our day centres to receive rehabilitation support. We offer 1:1 support to achieve the individual’s therapeutic goals as well as a varied activity programme to put into practice many of the skills that may have been lost or damaged as a result of the Brain Injury.


As a General Support volunteer, you will assist our clients to engage in informal activities in the day room and provide support to individuals during group activities. You will need to be able to assist a number of individuals with differing needs throughout the day. Working alongside the Social Rehabilitation Team, you will provide much needed support and really make a difference to an individual’s recovery. People with Brain Injuries need consistent and frequent practice to regain the abilities that were lost as a result of their injury and related sensory and cognitive difficulties - our volunteers are integral to this process.


You will receive regular support and supervision from the Social Rehabilitation Manager with training on Brain Injury and its impact on the lives of an individual.


Commitments:


If you can spare some of your time to volunteer at Headway SELNWK, we would ask that you can commit to a minimum of one day per week (or more..!) for at least a 3 month period.


Relevant Experience:


A Level 2 certificate in Health and Social Care would be an advantage, but is not necessary.
Any experience in a social care setting or neurological rehabilitation would also be advantageous but by no means essential.

Carpentry/Woodwork Volunteer

We’re looking for skilled carpentry/woodwork volunteers to lead and/or assist our clients during their activities program at our day centre in Abbeywood (Goldie Leigh Hospital site). Our varied activity program is designed to support our clients’ rehabilitation from Brain Injury, allowing them to re-learn lost abilities as a result of their injury and giving them the opportunity to learn new skills.


This role will enable you to create class projects and pass on your skills to really make a difference to an individual’s recovery. You will need to be able to assist a number of individuals with differing needs throughout the woodwork class and help out with additional tasks as necessary.


There will be additional support provided by volunteers and staff within the group. Headway will provide training on Brain Injury (BI), its impact on individuals and how to best support people with BI to participate in activities.


Jewellery Volunteer


Headway SELNWK supports the rehabilitation of Brain Injury and Stroke sufferers in the South East London and North West Kent area.


We’re looking for skilled volunteers to lead and/or assist our clients during jewellery making activity group at our day centre in Abbeywood (Goldie Leigh Hospital site). Our varied activity program is designed to support our clients’ rehabilitation from Brain Injury, allowing them to re-learn lost abilities as a result of their injury and giving them the opportunity to learn new skills.


This role will enable you to create class projects and pass on your skills to really make a difference to an individual’s recovery. You will need to be able to assist a number of individuals with differing needs throughout the jewellery class and help out with additional tasks as necessary.


There will be additional support provided by volunteers and staff within the group. Headway will provide training on Brain Injury (BI), its impact on individuals and how to best support people with BI to participate in activities.


Cookery Volunteer


Headway SELNWK supports the rehabilitation of Brain Injury and Stroke sufferers in the South East London and North West Kent area.


We are looking for volunteers who would be prepared to assist up to two clients at a time in our main kitchen. Following a Brain Injury, it is common to see a reduction in basic cognitive and sensory skills. As a result, regular practice and support is required to regain the skills, confidence and independence to perform certain tasks in the home and community. As a Cookery Volunteer, you will provide much needed assistance to our clients who want practice their cooking skills in a safe and supervised environment, enabling them to transfer these skills into their everyday, independent lives.


Gardening Volunteer


Headway SELNWK supports the rehabilitation of Brain Injury and Stroke sufferers in the South East London and North West Kent area.


We are looking for volunteers who would be prepared to assist a group of clients maintain and develop our Gardens at our Goldie Leigh and Deptford Social Rehabilitation Centre’s. Following a Brain Injury, it is common to see a reduction in basic cognitive and sensory skills. As a result, regular practice and support is required to regain the skills, confidence and independence to perform certain tasks in the home and community. As a Gardening Volunteer, you will provide much needed assistance to our clients who want practice their horticultural skills in a safe and supervised environment, enabling them to transfer these skills into their everyday, independent lives.


You will need to have general gardening skills and be able to support individuals, with differing needs, to achieve their personal goals.


There will be additional support from Headway Key-Workers will ensure that you receive training on Brain Injury, its impact on individuals and how to best support people with a Brain Injury to participate in activities.
